Farmer Veteran

Iraq“They will beat their swords into plowshares and their spears into pruning hooks. Nation will not take up sword against nation, nor will they train for war anymore.” Isaiah 2:4

Spence served a total of 9 years in the Army, both on active-duty and in the reserves. It was his experiences during a combat tour in Iraq as a machine gunner that drew him into farming. Through a combination of farming and faith, the farm has been a place of healing and growth for the Spencer family.

Across the Creek Farm has trained over a hundred veterans transition to farming through internships and workshops held on farm. Spence had the idea and found funding for the first Armed to Farm – a weeklong intensive “bootcamp” for veterans which is a partnership between the U of A and NCAT.
